Here’s how
Chemical face peels have been steadily growing in popularity, and it’s no wonder why. The treatment has a huge variety of uses, from scar reduction to improving skin texture, not to mention their relatively low cost compared to other dermatological therapies available today.
What is a chemical face peel?
While chemical face peels may sound similar to your everyday, over-the-counter face mask, there are quite a few key differences. Most notably, chemical face peels are much stronger, and exfoliate through several layers of your skin. While these peels come in various forms, most of the work applies a mixture of acidic compounds to the face. These compounds remove dead skin cells and de-clog pores, leading to an overall healthier appearance. Some of the common materials found in chemical face peels include lactic acid, salicylic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids.
Chemical face peels come in three main varieties: light, medium, and heavy. Each intensity has its own merits and figuring out which one is right for you depends on your goal and current skin type.
When to get a chemical face peel?
Due to the versatility of the chemical face peel, there’s never really a wrong time to get one. Common uses for chemical face peels include:
Acne reduction
Acne is a notoriously difficult-to-shake condition with a whole host of possible treatment avenues. Chemical peels have proven to successfully decrease the appearance of acne- discoloured skin, smooth out the textural irregularities left by scarring, as well as de-clog pores to help prevent future breakouts. Chemical peels for acne-prone skin are often composed of lactic and salicylic acid.
Wrinkles and ageing
As we age, our skin ages with us. However, chemical face peels can reduce the appearance of some of the age-related changes our skin goes through. For example, chemical face peels can help alleviate the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, discolouration, and dryness.
Scarring
The deep exfoliation a chemical face peel provides helps to stimulate collagen production. This process encourages new cell growth in the skin and can help reduce the appearance of facial scarring. Chemical face peels can be used to treat many different varieties of scar in this way, such as acne, burns, or other injuries.
Before your appointment
If you’re considering getting a chemical face peel, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, when you attend your consultation, you may be asked about your medical history to ensure the treatment is safe for you. If you’ve recently undergone any other treatments or cosmetic procedures, you may need to wait a while until you can have a chemical face peel done.
It is expected that you avoid exposure to direct sunlight in the days leading up to your treatment to ensure there are no unforeseen irregularities in your skin.
In addition to this, your skin type will need to be assessed to ensure that whichever treatment you opt for yields the best results possible. A variety of factors will influence how effective the treatment will be for you, such as your skin type, thickness, and tone.
During your appointment
The process of the treatment differs slightly depending on the intensity of your treatment.
- Your Aesthetic Practitioner will apply the chemical face peel and allow it to sit. You may feel some tingling sensation with medium or heavy peels.
- Once your skin has been treated, the peel will be removed via a neutralising agent.
After your appointment
Following your appointment, you may experience a few side-effects, such as redness, swelling, and tenderness. Your dermatologist will instruct you on how to care for your skin following the treatment, depending on the type of procedure.
