Exfoliation is a term used to remove the dead skin cells, that sit on the outer layers of the skin. It is beneficial for removing dry or dull skin, increase blood circulation, and brighten and improve your skin’s appearance.
There are different exfoliation methods. Your skin type should determine which way you use and how often you exfoliate. For specific skin conditions, including rosacea, exfoliation isn’t usually recommended.
What is Exfoliation
Approximately every 30 days, the upper layer (epidermis) of your skin sheds off naturally. This process reveals new, healthy, and rejuvenated skin underneath. However, the dead skin cells do not shed off entirely at times, resulting in dry, flaky looking skin.
Exfoliation is great because it eliminates the oldest dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin, bringing renewed and healthy cells to the surface of your skin.
While dry, flaky skin is not seen as a severe condition, it may be a skincare concern that may affect how makeup migrates onto your skin or affect your confidence. The key to getting rid of dry and patchy skin is a consistent and regular skincare routine that includes exfoliation.
At Renewed Skin Aesthetics, our signature DermaPlaning facial provides:
- An effective and safe exfoliation treatment.
- Removing the dead skin, which then promotes deeper product penetration.
- Boosting the effects of skincare products while making the skin look and feel smoother.
The importance of Exfoliating your Skin
A build-up of dead skin on your face can make it appear dull and dry, as well as clog your pores and restrict serums and moisturisers from infiltrating deep into your skin.
It is recommended that you should exfoliate one to two times each week for healthy, fresh, rejuvenated skin. The exfoliation process reveals healthy skin cells, enabling your serums and moisturisers to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin.
We do not recommend that you exfoliate your skin every day, as carrying out this process too often can produce micro-tears in your skin and slowly remove your skin barrier. Over exfoliating can lead to other skin concerns such as acne. Always follow skincare advice with caution.
Steps to take before Exfoliating
We would recommend consulting a skincare professional before using any tool or substance to exfoliate your skin. The effectiveness of the device or substance you’re using relies very much on your skin type.
A patch test is always recommended if you choose to go for a scrub or acidic based substance. If you do not have any adverse reaction to the patch test that you can begin to exfoliate starting one to two times per week.
Your skin is very delicate, and scrubbing harshly or too quickly can damage it by causing micro-tears. If you decide to use chemical exfoliators, please ensure that you use them as your doctor or skincare consultant recommended.
What are the benefits of exfoliating?
Aside from removing dry and dead skin, a regular exfoliation habit increases the skin’s radiance, clarity, and youthfulness, and that’s just the start.
- Unclogs your pores – If you don’t remove the dead skin from your face, your pores become sealed; this is when our sebaceous glands produce oil, which is then ‘stuck’ under the dry or dead skin. This will then cause breakouts because there is nowhere for the oil to go, and blackheads and whiteheads appear.
- Prevents acne breakouts – As we have mentioned above, unclogging your pores also prevents acne. Exfoliating regularly will help towards unclogging pores, therefore reducing acne or other blemishes on the skin.
- Enables better skincare product penetration – Exfoliation will help your serums, moisturisers, and growth factors to work deeper into the skin. Once you have removed the dead skin, acting as a barrier between your skin and serums, you allow everything to work much better and let the serums and skin care products work their magic!
- Increase cell turnover – With increased circulation, exfoliation of the skin will improve the skin’s radiance by supporting cell turnover, leaving the skin looking more glowing.
