Micro needling (Collagen Induction Therapy)
So, what is micro needling?
Micro-needling is a minimally invasive skincare treatment that stimulates the body’s natural response to “wound healing,” which stimulates new baby collagen and elastin production.
Micro-needling has been around for centuries, most commonly as acupuncture. However, for over 50 years, micro-needling has been practised worldwide for beauty purposes. With the last 20 years, the modern version of Micro-needling has taken the beauty and aesthetics industry by storm.
In today’s blog, we take a deeper look into some before and after-effects of micro-needling.
The benefits make micro-needling, is that this treatment boosts collagen, promotes healthy circulation, and tightens and lifts the skin. It’s a natural treatment, with no toxins or other chemicals used. Micro-needling is perfect for treating deep acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, melasma, and even stretch marks.
The Purpose of Micro-needling
The most important purpose is to reduce the signs of ageing, scaring, and creating a rejuvenated texture to the skin. As well as this, the treatment also enables skincare products to be easily absorb into the skin, yield more powerful results. And second, is to trigger the skin’s healing abilities.
We know the skin is a powerful organ, but did you know that the skin begins to produce new collagen as soon as it identifies an injury? With this, new collagen begins to rejuvenate the skin, creating an overall fresh, youthful appearance.
After the first treatment
Each person will vary, depending on
the condition of their skin. While in most cases, you will see significant changes.
in your skin, where the texture becomes firmer, tighter, and smoother to touch,
this might be 1-3 weeks after your treatment. Others might start to see the
reduction in scarring around day 5-7.
Day of Treatment
Following a detailed health and medical consultation and in preparation for your treatment, there are some ground rules to follow.
Upon arrival, keep your skin clean, avoid using any of your skincare products or makeup before micro-needling and, clean your face before arriving – Your Practitioner will cleanse your face before the treatment to ensure there are no purities left on your face.
The Practitioner will apply topical numbing cream to the skin area being treated 30 minutes before the procedure starts.
Post Treatment
After your micro needling treatment, the skin will be reddened, possibly a little ‘puffy’, and you may be aware of a bit of tenderness. You will also experience skin tightness, and the skin may even ‘peel’ in the first few days. Avoid picking or touching any skin that is shedding, it should be left to shed naturally. Please ensure that you limit touching your face.
On the day of your treatment, sleep on a clean pillowcase on your bed and have clean towels. Your pores will still be open.
The Healing Process & What to Expect After A Treatment
You may feel some irritation right after the treatment, for example, a tingling sensation on your face. Your Practitioner will apply a soothing cream to cool the face. Your face will feel warm too hot for about 15 to 20 minutes, and your body begins to cool down naturally.
DAY 1-3
A sunburn-like effect is expected. The skin will feel a little tight, dry, and sensitive to touch.
Post-treatment, a topical rescue cream, will be applied and cleansed.
If you shower that evening, please ONLY use tepid cool water, using hands only and pat dry with a new towel after – no earlier than 4 hours after treatment.
Redness or sensitivity might well be present. Some small bruising is common with micro-needling and may last up to 3-5 days.
DAY 2-7
You may experience some mild dry peeling 3-5 days after treatment, this is normal and is due to an increased turnover of skin cells. These are the results working from within.
Do not pick, scratch, or scrub at treated skin! ALWAYS allow old skin to flake off naturally and keep moisturised.
DAY 5-7
You may restart your regular skincare products and Retin-A once your skin is no longer irritated. Many patients have noticed continued skin improvement for months following the last treatment.
We recommend follow-up and repeat treatments in 4-6 weeks and a series of 3-5 treatments depending on your personalised care plan for best results.
