Tips for Helping Your Skin Survive Winter

Cosy nights in by the fire, all wrapped up for winter walks and then the signs of sensitive skin? Yep, all signs that we’re in the clutches of a cold snap!

As temperatures drop in the colder months, so does humidity, stripping away approximately 25% of the skin’s moisture, leading to increased dryness and sensitivity.

So, why do we get dryer skin in the winter as opposed to the summer months?

Pull-on your reading cap and your cosy sweater, because we’re about to share five ways to look after your skin this winter:

Moisturise: Each time you clean or wash, whether it be in the shower or a simple night-time facewash, the key to creating a good foundation for your skin in the cold is to keep it moisturised. Maintaining moisture in the skin will not only have you feeling great in the winter but looking great too.

As temperatures drop in the colder months, so does humidity, stripping away approximately 25% of the skin’s moisture, leading to increased dryness and sensitivity.

Drink more water – People assume that just because their car windscreen is frozen over that the moisture in the air will be enough to warrant not drinking too much water. This is entirely wrong, however, as the cold air is dehydrated and will do the same to your skin if you don’t combat it. The rule of drinking enough water runs all year round, so always keep your bottle with you. The recommended water intake is around 2 litres a day / 8 glasses.

Remove wet clothes – The rain and (heaven forbid) the snow will no doubt leave your clothes cold and damp. If kept on for a long time, the dampness of your clothes can irritate your skin, which if not addressed, can cause itchiness and rashes. Change into dry clothes as soon as you can, allowing your skin not to

Use good shower gels – We love to use these extravagant fragranced shower gels and creams when we wash in the morning or evening, but they often don’t work well with cold temperatures. Strong fragrances and alcohol-based gels will not help dry and cracked skin, so look for all-natural gels that are cream-based (instead of liquid) next time you’re out buying toiletries.

Always apply SPF sunscreen – This may seem ridiculous in the winter months; however, the sun doesn’t suddenly stop shining in these months – as much as it may feel like it. Cold days can make the sunshine feel deceptively light when the beams are drying out our skin just as much as they do in the summertime. On particularly bright days, applying some sun cream will help you lock in moisture and avoid skin damage, also wearing SPF every day, can combat the signs of ageing.
